Generally speaking, proteins and fats take longer to digest than carbohydrates. This allows foods that are high in fats and proteins to help you feel fuller or more satiated for a longer period of time than foods that only contain carbohydrates.
For those looking to lose weight or find snacks that keep them fuller throughout the day, I always encourage incorporating snacks containing fats and proteins. This will allow you to feel more satisfied with smaller portions. And as opposed to a snack containing simple carbs like a bag of pretzels or candies, you won't feel hungry shortly after your snack.
An example of a filling afternoon snack is my version of egg salad. Now this isn't your typical egg salad that you dollop a decent amount of mayo into. Instead, my recipe calls for 4 simple ingredients:
- 2 hard boiled eggs
- 2 Tbsp of skyr
- 1/4 tsp of paprika
- 1 medium raw zucchini (use for dipping!)
Yes, instead of mayo I used plain skyr. If you have never heard of skyr you are not alone. It is fairly new to the mainstream markets here in the U.S. It is an Icelandic yogurt. I personally really enjoy Siggi's because it's very low in sugar, high in protein, and it is delicious and creamy. It made my egg salad recipe light yet very creamy.
This recipe makes 2 servings and each serving provides about 100 calories, 5 grams of carbs, 6 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein.
